520 Nano-Ceramic Adhesion Promoter

(suitable for extreme low & high temperature* use)

  • The -520; is a high temperature/performance, single component, ambient cure.
  • The -520 gives added adhesion, for questionable surfaces, or high temperature use coatings
  • The -520 was chemically designed to: create a covalent bond to substrate materials, allow for simple application methods, being applied as a thin film coating resulting in high performance properties. Even so, surface cleanliness is still of the utmost importance.

The surface should be clean, dry and free from oils and other containments.

  • On metal & alloy component surfaces it is always preferred to have a light blasted profile on the surface to aid in the coating’s physical bond, if it is possible to do so.
The -520 covalently bonds well to all metal types, (i.e.; aluminum, titanium, stainless, metal oxides, epoxies and most plastics, coatings, etc.).

  • On composite substrate surfaces it is also preferred to have a very light abraded profile on the surface to aid in the coatings physical bond, if it is possible to do so.

Gently mix or shake the -520 primer contents before applying: (i.e.; by hand is acceptable)

If spraying, a fine spay tip (0.08) or similar is best, apply at 2 to 3 microns (dry film thickness) maximum. (more is not better).

  • Topcoat within 3-5 minutes of application – sooner is better (wet-on-wet is ok) – allowing the topcoat to bond well.
Please note! (allow the 520 primer to flash off before applying High Gloss finishes, as the -520 primer tends to reduce the surface gloss if a wet-on-wet application is used).

  • If the primer dries longer than 8 minutes before top-coating, re-apply the -520 as above, allowing the surface of the -520 to reopen-up again, to allow the topcoat to bond well.

The -520 primer may be applied directly to substrate surfaces where there concerns of proper adhesion, due to potential contamination, (i.e.; silicones, hard anodizing processes, etc.)

The -520 primer may also be used over any of other cured coatings, (tightly bonded), to achieve good intra-coat adhesion, for multi-color camo coatings or due to damage or similar.

As with any new material, always test application and finished properties on a low value test article or panel before working on valuable surfaces.

* “High Temperature” equates to “high performance, including exhaust temperatures”

Technical Data Sheet

1400 Series

Nano-Ceramic Solid Tone Coating

(Ideal for Firearms, Knife Blades and Military Equipment)

  • -1400 coatings are a high-performance single component coating, ambient air or oven curable.
  • -1400 coatings create a covalent bond to the substrate giving it an intrinsic bond to surfaces
  • -1400 coatings are extremely tough, extremely corrosion – extremely heat & flame resistant.
  • -1400 thin film coatings have – excellent UV resistance – excellent chemical & abrasion resistance
  • -1400 coatings are available in all standard industry colors & optional Wet-Grip and/or fine or medium textures for added grip and safety in Damp/Wet or extreme harsh conditions.

For multiple colors or camo, use the “-520 Clear Primer” vs. blasting the previous coat – get better quality with less chance of mistakes, and less labor required.

-1400 Series Properties:

  • Color: Standard Industry Colors
  • Viscosity: 16.0 – 16.3 sec. #2 Zahn

  • Specific Gravity: 0.9 (ASTM D891-09)
  • Pencil Hardness: 9h+ (ASTM D3363)*
  • Average applied dry film: thickness 5 to 25 microns (0.4 – 1 mil)
  • Estimated Coverage Rate(@ 1 mil/25 micron: 1,000 sq./ft. per gallon
  • Dry to Touch (time @ambient): 15 – 25 minutes (average)

(Exposing to a warmer air flow (not exceeding 110°F) will lessen “Dry to the Touch” time)

  • Ambient cure (full properties): 5 days

*Ambient cure properties after 5 days

  • Cure Time (time @350F)**: 30 – 40 minutes PMT (average)

**Oven cure only after coating is dry to the touch

Low temp or ambient curing will produce higher performance properties than rapid oven curing, as the resin cross-linking will stronger, when the solvents slowly exit the coating.

  • Offers extreme protection for Firearms, Knives and other Military Equipment
  • Extreme duty Abrasion Resistantance
  • High Temeraure & Flame Resistantance
  • Extremely Good Corrosion Resistance
  • A Tough, Smooth, Thin Film Coated surface
  • Solid Tone Coatings are formulated for simple application & high-performance results.

Note!  Surfaces must be free from oils and other containments before starting the coating process.

Application on metals and/or alloy components;

(firearms, their components, knives, etc.)

  • it is always best to create a blast profile by a fine 120 grit aluminum oxide, garnet or equal, on all of the surfaces that will be coated.
  • (Do not use Glass or natural Sand as this will impede the adhesion or the coating to the surface).
  • (Do not handle blasted parts with bare hands, as salts/acids will contaminate the surface and possibly cause a loss of adhesion in those areas that will see extreme heat or extreme weathering).
  • Mix contents well before applying to ensure that no solids are in the bottom of the container.
  • With clean dry air blow off any blasting dust that might remain on the surface to be coated.

Interior coating
:

  • Plug all of the openings or threaded holes to prevent coating from entering them.
  • Now hang the of all of the parts so that it allows for ease of spraying the exterior surfaces.
  • It may be necessary to attach a thin wire on small pieces to prevent “swinging” while spraying the coating on the part.

Exterior coating:

With a HLVP or similar spray gun fitted with a fine tip (i.e. 8);

  • A finer spray mist is better, enabling the product to flow out easier and help control the products thickness.
  • Now start to spray all of the hardest areas to coat first;
    • Then start to spray the remaining areas until the entire surface is coated with an approximate dry film thickness of .4 to 0.75mil (1 mil- max)
    • Let the coated parts ambient dry to a “Dry to the Touch” film, a warm 110°F(max) air flow will speed this up.
    • Do not put parts in an oven to cure – prior to totally achieving “Dry to Touch”.
      • If oven curing is required due to time constraints – 350F for 35-40 minutes PMT.
      •

NOTE! An ambient 5 day cure will result in a tougher & durable finish than oven curing, as the solvents leave slowly vs. being thermally forced out through the coating, opening micro-pores.
